Overview

Each institution can enable a mix of the methods below to suit their individual needs, including EZproxy, Referral URLs, Username and Password access, Institutional Affiliation access. However, for the following access methods, we can only enable one per account; Open Athens, Shibboleth, and single sign-on (SSO) services such as Microsoft Entra or Okta.

If we are setting up an off-campus methods that allows for multiple methods to be set up, any new off-campus access method that we set up will not interfere with access methods set up previously, and there are no extra costs involved.

Please note that for all off-campus methods we offer, all users (e.g. students, faculty, or your institution's employees) will be entitled to all your holdings. Singling out individual products is not possible. Further, all usage will be counted towards your normal COUNTER usage statistics. Unfortunately, we cannot provide usage per access method.

What off-campus access methods (remote access) does Sage Journals offer?

In addition to IP authentication on campus, Sage Journals supports the following access methods off campus:

Federated Single Sign-on (SSO) via Open Athens or Shibboleth

You may log in to your admin account and set up either Open Athens or Shibboleth. Please refer to these articles for full instructions on how to enable Open Athens or Shibboleth as your authentication method in your administrator profile settings:

Non-federated Single Sign-on (SSO) SAML authentication via Microsoft Entra or Okta

If you are interested in setting up a single sign-on (SSO) solution such as Microsoft Entra (formerly Microsoft Azure AD) or Okta, please contact Sage Online Tech Support at onlinesupport@sagepub.co.uk for details.

EZproxy (OCLC product)

Please e-mail your dedicated proxy IP(s) to Global IP Updates at IPUpdates@sagepub.com, and we will add your proxy IP(s) to your account.

Please note that you will need to include in your configuration the latest EZproxy stanza for Sage Publications and Journals, which is available on the OCLC EZproxy support website.

Referral URLs (https only)

This method is as follows:

  • The user is authenticated, logs into your secure and password-protected web page.
  • They will then be referred to Sage Journals from a page of your choosing.
  • When the user clicks on the Sage Journals link, the browser request sends the URL over, and this is the URL we authenticate traffic from.

To set this up, please contact our Global Online Technical Support Team at onlinesupport@sagepub.co.uk with the following details:

  • Institution name and account number (should you have it)
  • The URL(s) you wish to have added to your account
  • A username and password to your secure page, so we can test the access whilst setting it up

Username & Password access

For this method, Sage will provide the librarian with a link which will need to be distributed among patrons or other affiliated users. To set up this access method, the following steps should then be completed by the user:

  • Once the user has received the link, they will need to register a personal account on Sage Journals.
  • Then, while logged into their personal account, click the link to activate their access.
  • After this one-time activation, the user will then use their own e-mail address and password to log in going forward.

Institutional Affiliation Access

This method means that your patrons can gain remote access to your library holdings through their personal account on Sage Journals. To set up this access method, the following steps should be completed by the user:

  • Use this link to register for a personal account on Sage Journals
  • Sign into your personal account on Sage Journals whilst already authenticated to your institutional access (this can be by any method you use: Virtual private network (VPN), proxy, on campus IP access, OpenAthens or Shibboleth).
  • This will connect your personal account with your institution’s holdings for the next 90 days so that on subsequent visits you only need to sign in with your personal Sage Journals account to gain access.
  • Once your access expires after the 90 days, re-connect your access by repeating the process: authenticate via the institution, then sign into your personal account.
  • This affiliation feature is already available for all subscribing institutions and the connection will be valid for 90 days—providing faculty, staff, researchers, and students the ability to easily access your Sage Journals holdings while working and studying off campus.
