What off-campus access methods (remote access) does Sage Journals offer?

Modified on Thu, 15 Jun 2023 at 02:45 PM

General Notes:

Each institution can enable a mix of the methods below to suit their individual needs. Apart from Open Athens and Shibboleth, for those we can only enable one or the other per account. Any new off-campus access method that we set up for you will not interfere with access methods we have set up for you previously, and there are no extra costs involved.

Please note that for all off-campus methods we offer, all students will be entitled to all your holdings. Singling out individual products is not possible. Further, all usage will be counted towards your normal COUNTER usage statistics. Unfortunately, we cannot provide usage per access method.

Should anything be unclear, or if you have further questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to our Global Technical Support Team at: onlinesupport@sagepub.co.uk

In addition to IP authentication on campus, Sage Journals supports the following access methods off campus:

Institutional Affiliation Access

Your patrons can gain remote access to your library holdings through their personal account* on Sage Journals. In order to set up this access, they need to sign into their personal account on Sage Journals whilst already authenticated to your institutional access (this can be by any method you use: Virtual private network (VPN), proxy, on campus IP access, or OpenAthens/Shibboleth. This will connect their personal account with your institution’s holdings for the next 90 days so that on subsequent visits they only need to sign in with their personal Sage Journals account to gain access. Once their access expires after the 90 days, they can re-connect their access by repeating the process: authenticate via the institution, then sign into their personal account. This affiliation feature is already available for all subscribing institutions and the connection will be valid for 90 days—allowing your faculty, staff, researchers, and students the ability to easily access your Sage Journals holdings while working and studying off campus.

*Users can register for a personal account on Sage Journals at https://journals.sagepub.com/action/registration.

Open Athens & Shibboleth

You log in to your admin account and set these up. Full instructions can be found here

Referral URLs (https only):

The user is authenticated, logs into your secure and password-protected web page, and will then be referred to Sage Journals from a page of your choosing. When the user clicks on the Sage Journals link, the browser request sends the URL over, and this is the URL we authenticate traffic from.

To set this up, please contact our Global Online Technical Support Team at onlinesupport@sagepub.co.uk with the following details:

  • Institution name and account number (should you have it)
  • The URL(s) you wish to have added to your account
  • A username and password to your secure page, so we can test the access whilst setting it up

EZproxy (OCLC product)

Please e-mail your dedicated proxy IP(s) to Global IP Updates, and we will add your proxy IP(s) to your account.

The Sage stanza can be found here.

Username & Password access:

Sage will provide the librarian with a link which will need to be distributed among patrons or other affiliated users. Once the user has received the link, they will need to register a personal account on Sage Journals and then, while logged in to this personal account, click the link to activate their access. After this one-time activation, the user will then use their own e-mail address and password to log in going forward.
